How to Set Up a Live Scoreboard for Your Flag Football League

What do you need to run a live scoreboard?

You need one internet-connected phone or tablet per field, a person to operate it, and a scoreboard app with shareable game links. No dedicated hardware, no cabling, no physical scoreboard. Any modern phone with a data connection can run the field, and parents follow along by opening a link in a browser.

Operators overestimate this constantly. You do not need scoreboard hardware, a laptop cart, or a tech volunteer. You need a phone per field and an app that updates the score in real time. Who runs the scoreboard on game day?

The referee runs the scoreboard — score and game clock only — because they already control the game and shouldn’t be buried in a phone. A separate stat keeper, often a volunteer parent or older sibling, enters player-level stats. Splitting the two jobs keeps the clock moving and keeps stats accurate.

This is the single most important setup decision, and most leagues get it wrong by asking one person to do everything. The referee owns the game — they should tap the score and start/stop the clock, nothing more. If you make the ref log every catch and flag pull, the game grinds to a halt while they type. Detailed stats are a second, dedicated role.

How do parents watch the game live?

Parents open the Game Glance game link in a supported browser and sign in; no app install is needed. Access follows the league’s season model. All-In covers family access without parent checkout; Parent Pass and League Earn use a pass for each verified child. Individual child stats require a verified relationship.

Share the game link on the team page, in the group chat, or on a QR code at the field. Include sign-in and season-access instructions so families can resolve access before kickoff. Sharing an official league link does not grant someone else access to live games or a child’s individual stats; final scores remain publicly shareable.

A quick game-day flow

1. Referee opens the game on their phone and starts the clock.
2. Stat keeper (if present) opens the same game to log plays.
3. Parents open the game link or scan the QR code, then sign in with season access.
4. Score and clock update live for authorized viewers.

How do you keep the live stats accurate?

Keep live stats accurate by having a dedicated stat keeper — not the referee — enter plays as they happen, reviewing the box score at halftime and after the game, and correcting mistakes before results are finalized. One trained person per team who watches only their kids’ games is more accurate than a rushed referee juggling both jobs.

Accuracy is a staffing question, not a software question. The most accurate stat lines come from a parent who only has to watch one team and cares about getting their own kid’s numbers right. Give that person a moment at halftime to reconcile, and a moment after the final whistle to review before anything locks. A stat keeper who can fix a miskeyed touchdown before results publish beats a "perfect" system that no human double-checks.
