  • You want your league to feel organized, professional, and trustworthy

For Referees

  • You want a part-time job that pays well and keeps you around sports
  • You don't want to feel lost or embarrassed on game day
  • You want to know exactly what to call and when
  • You want more assignments and to be the ref leagues trust
  • You want something real to show when a league asks "Do you have any training?"

Whether you're running the league or running the field, this certification is designed for you.

Why Get Certified

Real outcomes for leagues and referees

If You're a League Operator…

  • Fewer missed calls and rule misunderstandings
  • Less chaos, fewer heated sideline arguments
  • Safer play through consistent enforcement of non-contact rules
  • Easier to hire and onboard new officials
  • A more professional product for parents, players, and sponsors
  • Peace of mind knowing your officials are properly trained

If You're a Referee…

  • Walk onto the field knowing exactly how to run a game
  • Be the ref leagues request again—and pay again
  • Understand flags, penalties, and mechanics instead of guessing
  • Handle coaches confidently without being a jerk
  • Stand out when applying to work for new leagues
  • Earn a credential you can actually show potential leagues

When officials are trained the right way, everybody wins — leagues, referees, parents, and players.

Why Trust FlagFootballAdvice.com?

FlagFootballAdvice.com was founded by Gavin Fontenot, who started and scaled Louisiana Flag Football from ~175 players to over 2,000+ through systems-driven operations. Unlike theoretical courses written by people who've never run a league, this certification was built by someone who has:

  • Hired, trained, and managed dozens of officials across multiple seasons
  • Dealt with real game-day chaos and knows what actually matters
  • Built operational systems that made growth predictable and games consistent
  • Focused on safety, fairness, and professional game-day experiences for families

This isn't just theory — it's real game-day experience distilled into a certification that works.

Referee Certification FAQ

Everything you need to know about the upcoming certification

Who is this certification for?

This certification will be designed for two audiences: (1) League organizers who want to standardize officiating across their league, and (2) Individual referees who want professional training to work youth flag football games. No prior experience will be required.

Do I need prior experience to pass?

No. This course will be built for complete beginners. We will walk you through every rule, mechanic, and situation from the ground up. If you've never reffed before, you'll be game-ready after completing this training.

How long does the course take?

The full course will take about 1.5 hours to complete. You will be able to watch it all at once or break it into smaller chunks. Once you finish, you'll take a 50-question exam to earn your certification.

Is this only for NFL FLAG leagues?

No. This course uses an NFL FLAG-style baseline because it's the most common ruleset, but we include an entire module on adapting to any league's rules. Whether you're working with YMCA, Parks & Rec, school leagues, or independent organizations, this certification will prepare you.

Will my local league accept this certification?

Most leagues accept third-party referee training and certification, especially when it's comprehensive and professionally structured. We recommend checking with your specific league, but this certification is designed to meet or exceed the standards of most youth flag football organizations.

What age do I need to be to take the course?

There's no age requirement for the course itself. However, individual leagues set their own minimum age requirements for referees (usually 13-16 years old). Check with the league you want to work for to confirm their policy.

Can leagues bulk-enroll their referees?

Yes. When the certification launches, league organizers will be able to certify multiple referees at once. Contact us for information about bulk enrollment pricing and group management options.

What happens if I fail the exam the first time?

You can retake the exam. We want you to succeed, and the exam is designed to ensure you actually understand the material — not to trick you. Review the course content and try again.

Is this recognized if I move to a different league or city?

Yes. Your certification is portable and can be shown to any league when applying to work as a referee. It demonstrates you've completed professional training and understand youth flag football officiating.

Can I access the content again after getting certified?

Yes. Annual certification holders have course access for the duration of their certification year. Lifetime certification holders have permanent access to the course and any future updates.

What's the difference between Annual and Lifetime certification?

Both include the full course, exam, and digital certificate. Annual certification ($25/year) must be renewed yearly, while Lifetime certification ($108 one-time) never expires and includes permanent course access. If you plan to ref for 5+ years, Lifetime is the better value.

Is there a refund policy?

Yes. When the certification launches, if you're unsatisfied within 14 days of purchase and have completed less than 25% of the course, you will be able to request a full refund.
